The top photo shows the long drive down to Upper Battlescombe farm and its beautiful setting. Gordon Close came here as a tenant of Squire James of Edgeworth Manor in 1920. In the same year his son, Donald was born and he grew up and lived at the farm for many years. In 1943 he married Mariette Restall, daughter of Gilbert and Bessie Restall of the New Inn. In reply to a question “ How did you meet your wife? “ He answered “ You had no transport in those days. You could only walk – I was the nearest and it was a pub, I thought that was nice too.” The next picture shows the farmhouse about 1989. Donald had just retired and the sale of the farms was going through. The last photo of a map dates to about 1895 shows the layout of the two farms. Little had changed.
